Founder John Hensley celebrated the milestone with a mini music festival called ’50 Years of Groovy Deals.’

Led by founder John Hensley, who transitioned from a successful child acting career to real estate, Recreation Realty has established itself as a trusted and respected name within the local community and industry.

Hensley’s inspiring journey from a Hollywood child actor to a real estate broker is a testament to his determination and passion. His early acting experiences include working alongside renowned Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Jones and Robert Stack in the film Good Morning, Miss Dove. He appeared on the Loretta Young Show and a pilot film for the Donna Reed Show and starred in numerous TV shows, including the Mickey Mouse Club Show, sponsored by Kellogg’s and Pillsbury, whose commercials he was also a part of.

In 1968, after retiring from acting, Hensley shifted gears and entered the real estate industry with his mother and stepfather, focusing on sales of recreation properties on Scotts Flat Lake and the nearby Cascade Shores community.

Recreation Realty still operates at the same location it was born, off Hwy 20, five miles east of Nevada City and at the gateway of Scotts Flat Lake and the open space of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. In 2001, Hensley opened a second location, Nevada County Properties, with an office at the top of Broad Street in downtown Nevada City, CA.

Hensley has actively participated in and held leadership roles with various organizations, including Nevada City Rotary, Nevada County Association of Realtors, Nevada City Chamber of Commerce, and KVMR Radio Nevada City, to fuel his love for music. His involvement with Nevada City Rotary allowed him to contribute to international health and community development projects in Baja, Mexico, something he does to this day.

Hensley’s contributions and love for his local town earned him a Proclamation from Nevada City. He has also been honored as the Nevada City Business Person of the Year in 2011 and has become an Honorary Member of the Nevada County Association of Realtors.

To celebrate the milestone of being in business in the same community since 1973, Hensley hosted a music festival with over 25 local, talented musicians to play continuously from 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at The Wheelhouse Event Center.

It was a free-for-all music event and barbecue called “Peace, Love, and Real Estate: 50-Years of Groovy Deals” and served as a token of his thanks for finding success in this vibrant community and a lifestyle of peace, joy, and giving.
